The warning was issued after a Pacu fish was caught in local waters. The fish, which is a relative of the Piranha and is normally found in the Amazon, has razor sharp teeth, similar to humans.
An eight-inch (21cm) Pacu was caught in an eel trap in Oresund Sound off the south coast of Sweden.
Fish expert Henrick Carl from the Natural History Museum of Denmark says that the fish bite:
“because they’re hungry, and testicles sit nicely in their mouth.
It normally eats nuts, fruit, and small fish, but human testicles are just a natural target. It’s not normal to get your testicles bitten off, of course, but it can happen …”
The Natural History Museum issued the following warning:
“Keep your swimwear on if you’re bathing in the Sound these days – maybe there are more out there!”
It is not known how the fish came to be living in Swedish waters, which are much colder than the Pacu’s normal climate.
